ROURIKAURI FROZEN LAKE (SNOW CAMP)
‘DEO –TIBBA BASE’ CIRCUIT TREK

This is a very scenic, summer high-altitude trek. Starting from the Prini road head, the trek winds through lush green valleys, hanging glaciers, log bridges, high-altitude meadows and dazzling landscapes. To cherish you, are the peaks of the region – Deo-Tibba, Inderkilla and Hanuman Tibba. For the shutterbugs, the trek provides an ideal opportunity to go berserk. Leaving the Manali valley, the trek proceeds through evergreen cool forests of walnut, oak and the occasional alder. The view of the entire Kullu valley that is glimpsed all along the trail is excellent. Once atop the Raurikhauri (3850m), another spectacular panorama of peaks appears. The valley view from Raurikhauri is a photographer’s delight. You also see some good waterfalls and a number of lakes (Mountain tarn) on this trek.

MANALI:

The name Manali is derived from the world ‘Manualaya’ meaning ‘Home of Manu’ (The power giver), the saint who gave the world located in the upper Kullu valley, at an altitude of 6000ft. (2050m), and is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Himachal Pradesh. The place is famous center for adventure sports like Skiing, Heli-Skiing, Para-gliding, and River-rafting, Trekking and Mountaineering. Manali is also a launching pad for treks and expeditions in Dhauladhar range, Pir Panjal range, and Lahaul, Zanskar and Ladakh regions.

Day 01: The participants arrive at our Hotel / Base Camp at Prini road head (3km from Manali). In the evening, the students will go through a briefing.

Day 02: Hotel / Prini (Base Camp) - Tilgan (2470m) 4 hours.

The first day’s walk is an acclimatization trek via Sharvani Devi Temple, Arjun Gufa, Thakshak Nag Temple and Bhanara, through Bogi. Campsite is at Tilgan. Bhanara (2150m) has an old temple dedicated to the local God, Thakshak Nag. Another place of historic interest in the village is the remnants of Raja Piti’s fort, an earlier ruler of Kullu. Near the fort, you could also visit the historic cave (Arjun Gufa) where the Pandava Arjun is believed to have taken refuge during their exile.

Day 03: Tilgan - Sarra Bogi (3100m) 4 hours.

The trek starts with a moderate section at the start, through forest of silver fir, Bhujpattar, oak and chestnut. Enroute to Sarra Bogi you will find plenty of natural spring water. The trek reaches above the tree line and traverses horizontally. Sarra Bogi is located in a grassy knoll at the foot of Pha-Konda pinnacle peak (Trig Height). From the camp, there is an enchanting view of the Dhauladhar range and its lofty mountain peaks -Hanuman Tibba, Shikhar-bay, Maker-bay and Friendship peaks. From the campsite you can also have a full view of Manali town and the valley. The area between Tilgan and Sarra Bogi is known as ‘Jhamari’ and is very popular for the local Gaddi shepherds. They graze their herds of sheep on these vast grassy meadows. Keep a look out for one of the rare glimpses of brown bears above the Sarra Bogi campsite, towards Pha-Konda pinnacle peak (Trig Height).

Day 04: Sarra Bogi – Kharimindiyari / Soroutoo via Jogidugh (3250m) 5 hours.

Today’s trek is through the snowline to reach just below the Pha-Konda peak (Trig Height). The impressive grandeur of immediate surroundings, the nearness of the Pha-Konda cliffs, the wonderful coloring of rock and mountainside make it a very enchanting experience. Before reaching Jogidugh, a river, Phahi Nullah, has to be crossed. Once you reach this point, then it is a gradual, horizontal descent along the cliffs through thick forest, right up to Jogidugh. Jogidugh is famous in the Hindu mythology as a holy place of Thakshag Nag and all eighteen Serpent Gods. It is also said that during draught, the villagers of Manali area go up to Jogidugh to pray for rain and the ritual is followed till date. From Jogidugh is a little steep portion to be climbed up to the vantage point through juniper and after that horizontal way up to the Soroutoo and Kharimindiyari campsite. The campsite is in the open puff and having magnificent view of distant Mountain of Dhauladhar range.

Day 05: Kharimindiyari - Zameer (3300m.) 5 hours.

Today’s trek is an easy one with lots of streams, juniper and open space. Today’s trek gives a dazzling view of Kharimindiyari (meadows) and distant view of Raurikhauri. This open landscape gives a shelter and a grazing grass to cattle during summer. The trail passes through Bhujdhar (the name Bhujdhar means a place that has the trees from which the paper that was used in ancient times was made). The trail continues down to the Jhobari Bridge. Once you cross over Jhobri nullah then we follow a trail along the riverside. It’s gradual walk through the riverside forest. The trail goes upwards along the Jhobri Nullah. It is quite scenic and different shape of the valley with all natural spring water along the trail and cliff cascading at many places. Along the trail we see many Snow Bridge, Silver birch tree, silver fir and chestnut trees all the way up to Zameer. This campsite is lush green, has abundant natural spring water and surrounded by big boulders. The area is ideal for rock climbing and rappelling. At this site we get a glimpse of the high rising mountain massif Deo- Tibba and Indrasan.

Day 06: Zameer - Piyangniru (3600m.) 4 hrs.

The trek begins with a gradual walk up to some distance and little altitude is gained during the day. It is very easy walk along the Jhobri Nullah through snowy patches and the lush green valley right up to the head of Piyangniru. One can have a very close view of the mountain peaks, glacier valleys, hanging glacier, crevasses and a heart touching scenic panoramic view of almighty Deo Tibba peak. After having lunch visit to Deo Tibba glacier for look in to the fetching view of the Deo Tibba snout, which originates Jhobri River (3800m.) and back to camp.

Day 07: Piyangniru – RauriKhauri Lake (Frozen) (3850m.) 4 hours Snow Camp.

Today's trek has tackle tricky snow covered slopes in a zigzag way and steep portion to be climbed right up to top of the summit hill (3880m.) and after that gradually all the way descend down to Raurikhauri snow camp (frozen lake). At Raurikhauri one can have a good scenic beauty of a small frozen mountain tarn on the treeless landscape. This landscape is full of fauna & flora and one can have a luminous view of Kullu and Manali valley. The camp site is full of snow covered. After having lunch one can go for snow walking for about an hour and while retuning back all will go for snow rafting and glissading till camp. And also one can swallow distant magnificent snow capped mountains view of both Dhauladhar and Pirpanjal ranges from this commanding locations.

Day 08: Raurikhauri – Prini Road Head 6hrs.

Trek descends along the Lamadug pastures and through dense forest right up to Hamta village. The village of Hamta has an interesting legend attached to it. It’s said to be the way to heaven. It is reported that when the people of Hamta hear noises of crying, a dead soul is on its way to hell and when they hear the noises of trumpet, the soul is ascending to heaven. Trail descends down in a zigzag all the way down to Prini village road head. Stay overnight at Manali. Trek concludes.
